VCJ's Venture Alpha 2012

Just over 10 years ago, the Internet bubble burst and LPs and VCs alike bemoaned an industry where too much money was chasing too few deals. Ten years on, the VC industry is not dead - far from it.

The VC industry in 2012 is at an exciting crossroads. The industry today is attracting perhaps unprecedented attention from the media (Peter Thiel's "20 Under 20" Thiel Fellowship and the political focus on Bain Capital, are just two examples) as well as from Hollywood ("The Social Network"). This attention, coupled with some outsized returns on social media investments (Accel's Facebook exit is one of the best in the history of the industry) and the rise to global prominence of Silicon Valley-based companies like Apple (in August becoming the world's most valuable company), has resulted in the influx of young talent, risk takers and entrepreneurs to early stage companies. Meanwhile, the Obama Administration has enacted the JOBS Act, which will go into effect next year. That legislation is designed to both bolster IPOs and help startups raise money through crowd sourcing.

These trends aside, important questions loom for VCs, and contrarians are ready to call the top of the market. With Facebook's stock price languishing, the IPO markets have chilled. And while social media has driven venture capital back into the relevance and profitability for investors, other strategies within VC, like life sciences and cleantech, haven't performed as well.

Overall, the VC space remains dynamic, with an enduring cadre of investors willing to back top VC funds. But how can they find them? And what strategies will win out? As an LP, how do you identify the right VCs early on in the game?

On Oct. 18, the editors of Venture Capital Journal are once again convening GPs and LPs for a discussion and networking event on successful strategies in the venture business. Expanding on the success of our inaugural event last year, Venture Alpha will once again be a one-of-a-kind forum for managers and investors to engage both in general discussions and in pre-arranged private meetings. VCs and LPs have a unique opportunity to participate in pre-screened 1-on-1 meetings with each other during the day, through our ExecConnect program.

The future of the venture capital industry isn't in question; it's here to stay. What is in question is who will be on the right side of the shakeout. Be there to find out, and to raise capital for the next generation of funds.

We look forward to seeing you at Venture Alpha.
